We also expressed dismay with rest of country when India loose cricket match with Pakistan. Infact we are natural barrier against countries like China, Myanmar and Bangladesh.” The trainee police jawans patiently listen to the passionate lecture.

Financial support for housing project

The Indian government recently signed Loan and Project Agreements for World Bank assistance of about US $100 million for a low income housing finance project. The agreement was signed between the National Housing Bank (NHB) and the World Bank recently.

The objective of the project is to provide access to sustainable housing finance for low income households, to purchase, build or upgrade their dwellings. The project will have three components; which will include financial support for sustainable and affordable housing to enable the NHB to refinance low income housing loans. The loan money will also be used for capacity building of the National Housing Bank (NHB), Qualified Intermediary Institutions, and Qualified Primary Lending Institutions (QPLIs). The project is also looking at creating incentives for lenders to focus on lower income households through a net all-in reduction of the lenders' cost of funds.

The World Bank and the government of India have initiated the project to help India in reaching and creating a higher proportion of lower income households while maintaining quality standards. The project expects to develop prudent lending standards to serve the more vulnerable, lower income households, expand the coverage of credit bureaus to include informal income borrowers and also pilot new policies and products to overcome the challenges of dwelling informality.

Colony without telephone connection

Dear Editor,

Most readers of your esteemed daily would not believe if I say  there is a colony in capital complex  without telephone connectivity. Yes, there is one -  Pachin colony, in Naharlagun with over five thousand souls has a Secondary School, a Medical sub centre, good  electricity connection, Water Supply (though very irregular) and a Fair weather road  but precariously lacks the easiest and cheapest of all facilities the telephone connectivity.

Thanks to availability of number of mobile service network (with their erratic services) which takes the place of telephone connectivity  for the daily communication needs of the residents. But it certainly is of no use when it comes to accessing or working on internet. The colony also lacks National Informatics Centre (NIC) connection. One has to run over three Kms  to the nearest cyber café in the main Naharlagun Market and if the need is during night hours there is no help but to wait for the cyber café to open, the next day. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limit (BSNL) which boasts of Connecting India has miserably failed to connect the residents of Pachin Colony in the heart of the Itanagar Capital Complex for last  many years.

Hope, this letter would be an eye opener for the BSNL authorities and others to connect the neglected colony with rest of the country.

Yours’

Tadar Taha
